Description
Excellent cello bow by Hermann Richard PFRETZSCHNER (1857–1921), dating from 1900–1913.
Hermann Richard PFRETZSCHNER, the best bowmaker from the renowned PFRETZSCHNER bowmaking family in Markneukirchen, was the son of the bowmaker Carl Richard PFRETZSCHNER, from whom he also learned his trade. His stay in 1874 in the Parisian workshop of Jean Baptiste VUILLAUME, where he worked with the best bowmakers of the time, was crucial for his later quality. This gave him very good contacts in France. Between 1900 and 1913 he regularly supplied bows to the violin making company “Silvestre & Maucotel”, which then stamped his bows with its name. This company was supplied by the best bow makers of the time, such as BAZIN, LAMY, Louis THOMASSIN, HUSSON and also H.R. PFRETZSCHNER. A similar cello bow by H.R.PFRETZSCHNER (also stamped “Silvestre & Maucotel”) is shown in the bow book “Les Archets Francais” by Etienne Vatelot in volume 2, page 840, picture 3.
