Description
Georg KLOZ (I) 1687 – 1737, was the eldest of three sons of Matthias KLOZ (the founder of Mittenwald violin making), who learned the profession of violin making from their father. His two brothers were Sebastian KLOZ (1696 – 1775) and Joan Carol KLOZ (1709 – 1769).
Our Georg KLOZ (I) is not to be confused with Georg KLOZ (II) (c. 1723 – 1797), a son of Sebastian KLOZ.
The instruments of Georg KLOZ (I) are very rare; after all, he was a contemporary of Antonius Stradivarius.
The instrument bears the wonderful original label inscription
Giorgio Kloz propria Mea
Manu feci in Mittenwald ao: 1733
The violin has a warm and very beautiful sound.
More detailed information about the Kloz family can be found in the excellent book by Wolfgang Zunterer:
“Kloz: The Violin Maker Family from Mittenwald.” Hofmeister Publishing 2024.
In this book, on pages 72/73, there is an illustration of a second violin by Georg Kloz from the year 1732, which, according to dendrochronology, shares the same tree origin as our instrument.
